Dewey Spangler
Dewey Spangler is the manager of the Ware Lab and instructor of EngE 1434 for the College of Engineering. He is responsible for daily operation of the lab, working with student project teams, communicating with corporate and individual sponsors and promoting Virginia Tech to prospective students. Dewey teaches EngE 1434, Fundamentals of Engineering, during each second summer session to students transferring to the college of engineering from other departments and universities.
Dewey received his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Virginia Tech in Civil Engineering and conducted load behavior testing of full-scale structural steel building components at the structures and material lab. He is currently working on a PhD in mechanical engineering in the area of active magnetic bearings.
Upon graduation with the M.S., Dewey worked for 10 years as a design engineer for John W. Hancock, Jr., Inc. (now New Millennium Steel) in Salem, Virginia. He spend seven years as chair of the engineering transfer department at Virginia Western Community College, and three years as an instructor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He is professionally licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Derwin Stafford
Derwin Stafford is the Machine and Welding Shop Supervisor in the Ware Lab. He is responsible for the daily operation of the shops, performing machine shop certifications and providing assistance to students that have questions about the fabrication of their projects.
Derwin started working at Virginia Tech in 1994 in the Mechanical Engineering machine shop. He was responsible for fabricating parts needed by faculty members for research projects. Derwin has been with the Ware Lab since it opened in 1998 serving as a machinist and currently as shop supervisor.
