One of the strengths of Hypatia and Galileo is the involvement of upper class students. In addition to mentoring, they also organize and lead the following committees for the communities:
- Academic and professional support – holding regular “office” hours to help students with homework, leading and organizing review sessions, hosting events to prepare for career fairs, etc.
- Social – planning and organizing events for students to interact and meet each other outside of class
- Service learning – planning and organizing community service activities for the community
- Outreach – planning and organizing K-12 efforts, including hands-on activities for students to learn about engineering and hosting school visits to campus
- Communications and media – collecting information from the other committees to distribute to first-year students in a weekly email,
weekly newsletter, and Facebook page
Some of the activities planned by the committees this year included:
- Hiking to the Cascades
- Shaving cream whiffle ball
- S’Mores night bonfire
