Virginia Tech chemical engineering professor, Ted Oyama, is the 2009 recipient of the Catalysis Club of Philadelphia Award.
Oyama, who holds the Fred W. Bull Chaired Professorship of Chemical Engineering, was recognized for his outstanding contributions and leadership in catalysis research.
In his early work, he made significant contributions to the understanding of catalytic reactions on metal carbides, nitrides and oxides. He uses state-of-the-art spectroscopy methods to obtain information about catalysis in the working sate.
Oyama currently works in three areas: the oxidative transformation of hydrocarbons to high-value products, the development of novel catalysts for the upgrading of petroleum resources and the development of membranes and membrane reactors for the selective separation of gases.
Oyama was honored during his award lecture this month with a plaque and a $1000 cash prize.
