Alan A. Kornhauser, P.E., an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., will begin a four-year term as a member of the ASME Committee on Ethical Standards and Review (CESR) in July 2008.
The committee is responsible for the activities of ASME that relate to ethics in engineering and engineering practice. Programs include maintenance of the ASME Code of Ethics and policies on conflicts of interest and harassment, as well as establishing procedures for handling ethics cases. CESR also sponsors seminars and develops websites on engineering ethics.
Kornhauser teaches courses on energy-related topics including thermodynamics, internal combustion engines, and industrial energy technology. His research includes work related to internal combustion engines, Stirling engines, refrigeration systems, and fuel cells. His work experience is broad and includes assignments in marine engineering, process plant design, and plant engineering. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He holds B.S. and M.E. degrees in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an Sc.D. in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a professional engineer license in New York.
