What are the requirements to enroll in a graduate program through CGEP?
The basic requirements are below but please contact the graduate coordinator for the desired department prior to application to verify:
- Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate engineering field
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher
- The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required by some departments.
- Those not meeting basic requirements will be reviewed on an individual basis
Where can I take classes?
Classes can be taken at any of the participating receive sites, please check with the receive site to confirm that the course you want to take is available at that location. Go to the receive site listing for more information.
Do I have to enroll in a master’s degree program to take a CGEP course?
No, a student is able to take up to 12 semester hours before enrolling in a master’s degree program through the Commonwealth Campus. The graduate school website provides application.
How does CGEP make its courses available to students in the distance environment?
Most of CGEP's course offerings are broadcast live using two-way digital videoconferencing technology. The two-way videoconferencing environment provides students in the distance environment with an interactive, real-time learning environment. They can see and hear the faculty member as he or she lectures. They can also see the faculty members lecture notes in real time. If a student in the distance environment has a question, he or she can ask the question by pressing a button to open an audio link back to VT. While the question is being asked, the faculty member can also see that student in the remote environment. While the courses are broadcast live, videotapes and on-line archives of all classes are available until the end of the semester. If a student misses a class because of a personal or work-related conflict, he or she can view that lecture by requesting a tape or by viewing the class session from VT's stream media web site.
Do you have out-of-state receive sites?
At this time we only have corporations that serve as receive sites for their employees. We are considering other means of serving out-of-state students.
How do I become a receive site?
Contact the Virginia Tech CGEP Administrator for more information.
Do you have courses for undergraduates?
Presently CGEP offers only post baccalaureate courses. For more information about distance learning for undergraduates visit the Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning (IDDL)
Do you offer professional development or softskill courses?
Yes, we have several courses that can be taken through the Continuing Education Center of Virginia Tech.
Do you offer summer session courses?
Required courses are typically offered during the fall and spring semesters. However, it is possible to encourage the offering of summer courses by communicating your interest to your site coordinator. Virginia Tech offers engineering courses at a distance that are not part of the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program that may be acceptable additions to your plan of study.
A full catalog of Virginia Tech courses at a distance is online at the VTOnline E-learning Gateway.
