Reza Arghandeh of Blacksburg, Va., a doctoral candidate in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech under the advisement of Robert Broadwater, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been awarded the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Scholarship Award.
“I will use the funds to further my dissertation work and expand my knowledge of renewable energy resources and energy efficiency approaches. Improving power engineering is one of the best ways to serve the community,” said Arghandeh.
Recently Arghandeh won the best student paper award at the 20th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering, held in conjunction with the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Power 2012 Conference at Anaheim, Calif. The paper was titled, “Distributed Solar Energy Storage Control for Optimal Adoption of Solar Energy in Residential Networks.”
Arghandeh will complete his Ph.D in May of 2013. His research is focused on the evolution of power systems by using the smart grid. Control and monitoring techniques, renewable energies, energy storage, and electricity markets are methods used to improve efficiencies of power systems. By applying optimization and multi decision-making techniques, Arghandeh investigates ways to find better solutions for the power grid.
“Post-graduation I would like to work in academia, conducting research on cutting edge technologies for power and energy systems, educating younger generations on how to improve energy resources, and using my research as material for the classroom, “said Arghandeh.
Founded in 1977, the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), a non-profit professional organization, is the first society to pioneer energy certification programs. The mission of AEE is “to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development.”
