This guide will help you get familiar with the computing services commonly used by the College of Engineering's Dean's Office team. Please review Virginia Tech's Acceptable Use Guidelines before using your computer or accessing any online resources.
Create Your PID
- Your PID is your unique Personal Identifier. Your PID and PID password grant you access to Virginia Tech services including the library databases and online personal information.
- You can create your own PID once your department’s Banner Human Resources representative has completed the necessary steps and given you your Virginia Tech ID number.
Get Your Computer
- Your office should already have a computer for you at your desk and the Information Technology staff should be aware of your arrival. If not, have someone in your office submit a help ticket for you.
- New computers are purchased by each individual office when needed. Every four years those using Banner computers will have them replaced if eligible. Eligibity requirements change year to year.
Connect to the Internet
- On campus your computer will be connected using an ethernet connection and a static ip.
- Away from your desk and when at home you should use a wireless connection. Once you have your pid you can submit a help ticket to request wireless internet access on campus.
Email and Files
- Faculty and staff in the Dean's Office use the Hokies Exchange server, a premier email and calendaring solution for Email. This service includes integrated email, appointments, tasks, contacts, and directory access.
- Your Hokies credentials are also used to gain access to your department's fileshares.
- Once you have a PID, you can create your own Hokies account.
- After you have created your Hokies account, you can set up your Full Exchange Account.
- Don't forget to forward your email from Google.
- You should also forward your spam to Exchange and use Outlook to filter your junk mail.
- Once you have a Hokies account, submit a help ticket requesting access to both your departmental and personal file share.
Intradepartmental Communication
- Faythe maintains a .xls directory listing of the Dean's Office Personnel. Email Faythe to make sure you are on the directory listing and to be added to the "Deanery" listserv.
- Schedule a professional photo for yourself for your directory listing on the web. Make sure to send your photo to the webmaster once you have received it.
Setup Your Office Phone
Navigating Phone Options (pdf)
- If you do not know your voicemail password, your Communications Liaison can get it reset (Becky or Faythe).
- Record your subscriber's recorded name (this will play when you leave messages on campus).
- Record your voicemail message and configure your settings.

- The University provides Symantec Antivirus free of charge for faculty and staff, although in the Dean's Office we are using Microsoft's Forefront Protection.
