L-3 STRATIS announced today that it has joined with Virginia Tech as an industry partner in the Security and Software Engineering Research Center (S2ERC), which was established with a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). L-3 STRATIS – an industry leader in cyber, intelligence and IT services and solutions – will participate in cybersecurity research to ensure its immediate application to problems faced by key government customers.
“The S2ERC program is an important element of our strategic cybersecurity research partnership with Virginia Tech,” said Les Rose, president of L-3 STRATIS. “Much of our research will be conducted in L-3’s Cybersecurity Solutions Center, co-located with Virginia Tech’s Cybersecurity Innovations Lab in Northern Virginia. The goal of the S2ERC program and our overall partnership with Virginia Tech is to speed the availability of next-generation cybersecurity solutions to our customers. We have extensive experience with securing networks and communications in both classified and unclassified environments, as well as an in-depth understanding of the immediate and long-term cybersecurity challenges of our customers. Our collaboration with Virginia Tech will advance the development of solutions to some of the most complex cybersecurity problems facing government and private sector organizations now and in the future.”
S2ERC is an Industry & University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) program sponsored by the NSF to encourage collaboration between academia and industry. The I/UCRC model allows university researchers to work on real-world problems alongside experienced practitioners in industry, while providing industry partners better access to cutting-edge research.

Dr. Clancy, who leads Virginia Tech’s S2ERC program efforts, added, “Cybersecurity is a critical priority for both government and industry. The research we conduct in collaboration with L-3 will advance the state of mobile and cloud security.”
S2ERC is the only I/UCRC program dedicated to software engineering, with a focus on cybersecurity. NSF recently approved Virginia Tech as one of three main S2ERC sites and awarded the university a five-year continuing grant for its research. The other main sites are located at Ball State University and Iowa State University.
