Responsibilites

Douglas A. Harold is the supervisor for the Joseph F. Ware Jr. Advanced Engineering Laboratory. His primary responsibilities include managing both the Welding Shop and Klages Machine Shop, training students, maintaining the equipment and an inventory of supplies, and supporting a safe and efficient work environment. While the students are expected to perform their own work, he is available to assist them as needed.

Education and Background

Doug has over a decade of experience in the custom machining, fabrication and mechanical trades industry, and is experienced in most welding processes (including MIG, TIG, SMAW, and oxyfuel welding of cast iron, tool steel, chromoly, stainless steel, and aluminum), and in performing common machining processes with milling machines and lathes, etc. He is also experienced with electronics, data acquisition systems, and fiber optic sensing systems.

In addition to this, he has a multidisciplinary education which includes mathematics, biology, and engineering mechanics. In 2012, Doug received an M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech, and prior to that, he completed his B.S. degree at Tennessee Temple University with majors in both Biology and Earth Science, and a minor in Mathematics. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech.

Doug has an avid interest in teaching, and has taught Pre-calculus (at Tennessee Temple Univ.), as well as Mechanical Behavior of Materials Laboratory and several semesters of Mechanics of Deformable Bodies (at Virginia Tech). He is experienced in the use and programming of Mathcad, Mathematica, Matlab, and LabVIEW.
