
Virginia Tech is the home of the Commonwealth’s leading College of Engineering. The college, its faculty and its administration are known in Virginia and throughout the nation for outstanding programs in engineering education, research, and public service.
"America's Best Colleges 2008" survey released by U.S. News & World Report in August 2007 ranked the Virginia Tech College of Engineering's undergraduate program 14th in the nation among all accredited engineering schools that offer doctorates, and eighth among those at public universities. The Virginia Tech engineering college shares the 14th spot with the engineering colleges at Johns Hopkins and Northwestern universities. The individual college rankings are based on assessments by deans and senior faculty at peer institutions.
The magazine's "America's Best Graduate Schools 2009" survey, released in March 2008, ranked the College's graduate program 28th among all the nation's engineering schools and 17th among engineering schools at public universities.
In the most recent survey (2007) of the Engineering Workforce Commission of the American Association of Engineering Societies, Inc., the Virginia Tech College of Engineering ranked ninth nationally for the total number of degrees awarded, sixth for the number of undergraduate degrees awarded, 22nd for the number of master's degrees and 14th for the number of Ph.D.s.
The College of Engineering offers bachelor of science degrees in the following areas: Aerospace Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Engineering Science and Mechanics, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Ocean Engineering. The Construction Engineering and Management program will be initiated in Fall 2007 and will graduate the first class in Spring 2009. It will seek accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission immediately thereafter. All other College of Engineering undergraduate programs in engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone: (410) 347-7700.
