Distance Learning Programs

Overview:

Engineering Distance Learning degrees are offered through several programs that act as vehicles for earning degrees from Virginia Tech and affiliated universities. The courses are available online and from receive sites around the state. We currently offer two programs entirely online, the Master of Science in Ocean Engineering and the Master’s of Information Technology. If you are interested in doctorate programs or are affiliated with the National Institute for Aerospace (NIA), please read about the offerings via NIA or through the Virginia Consortium of Engineering and Science Universities. Master’s level distance learning programs include the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program, the Center for Power Electronics Systems, and the School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.

Center for Power Electronics Systems

Overview:

The Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) is one of the Nation’s National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers. The Center has formed a coalition with four universities to provide the nation with the capabilities to become a world leader in power electronics. The members of the coalition are:

  • Virginia Tech
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • North Carolina A&T State University
  • University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez

Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program

Overview:
The Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP) is a distance learning graduate program offering qualified individuals the opportunity to earn a master’s degree part time through on-site and videoconferencing classes. The CGEP is a consortium of approximately 20 receive sites and five universities across Virginia. Consortium Universities include:

  • Virginia Tech
  • George Mason University
  • Old Dominion University
  • University of Virginia
  • Virginia Commonwealth University

Masters of Information Technology

Overview:
The Master’s of Information Technology (MIT) program can be completed entirely through web-based courses for a master’s degree in information technology and include a graduate certificate in one of six different areas: communications, networking, computer engineering, software development, business information systems and decision support systems. Students in Northern Virginia may also earn the masters degree and certificates by completing web-based courses complemented by face-to-face and interactive video courses at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church.

National Institute of Aerospace

Overview:
The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) at Langley Research Center is a world-class research and education institute created to do cutting edge aerospace and atmospheric research, develop new technologies for the nation and help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Member institutions include:

  • Virginia Tech
  • Georgia Tech
  • NC State University
  • University of Virginia
  • North Carolina A & T University
  • Hampton University
  • University of Maryland

Ocean Engineering (Naval Engineering) Online Master of Science

Overview:
Virginia Tech’s Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department offers a Master of Science degree in Ocean Engineering (Naval Engineering) concentrating on naval ship design and related topics. Each courses is offered using the Internet only and employs both synchronous (two-way live communication between student and professor) and asynchronous (presentation-only material packaged into downloadable modules that can be viewed on demand) delivery techniques. Courses are taught by on-campus faculty as well as practicing professionals. Program requirements, schedules, admissions, and faculty links are online at http://www.vto.vt.edu/progdesc.php?id=oceng.

School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences

Overview:
The School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES) is a fully joint venture between Wake Forest University and Virginia Tech, which initially integrates the capabilities of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. The SBES graduate program allows students to earn M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering, a joint M.D./PhD. program through the WFU School of Medicine, and a joint DVM/PhD. program through the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Students may take classes on either campus or via distance learning while residing on their home campus in either Blacksburg or Winston-Salem.
