Scott Case, professor and associate department head of engineering science and mechanics (ESM) at Virginia Tech, will serve as the interim associate dean for academic affairs during the 2010-11 academic year.

Bev Watford, the current associate dean, will be serving as the interim head of the department of engineering education, replacing Hayden Griffin who is leaving Virginia Tech to join East Carolina University.

“The academic year of 2010-11 will be a challenging one for us, with an entering freshman class currently standing at 1613. Even allowing for some “summer melt,” it will be huge,” said Richard C. Benson, dean of the college. “We will work vigorously through the summer to get ready. Fortunately, we have a superb team in the Office of Academic Affairs, including Bev Watford and Scott Case. All will be challenged in 2010-11.”

Case received all three of his degrees at Virginia Tech: a bachelor’s degree in ESM in 1992; a master’s and a doctoral degree in engineering mechanics in 1993 and in 1996, respectively.

Among his honors, he received a 2007 Dean’s Award for Research, a Faculty Fellow Award in 2004, and was an ABET IDEAL Scholar in 2006. In 2002, he was named an Outstanding New Assistant Professor in the college.
