National Institutes of Health names Virginia Tech alumnus Engineer of the Year

Tim Baldwin, an alumnus of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, has been named the 2010 Engineer of the Year by the National Institutes of Health. He also was a finalist for the Federal Engineer of the Year Award by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Baldwin earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Virginia Tech in mechanical engineering (in 1985, later earning a doctoral degree at Penn State. He now is the deputy chief and a program director in the Advanced Technologies and Surgery Branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Md. In this position, Baldwin is focused on bioengineering approaches and development of devices to treat cardiovascular disease.

“I consider my education and experience at Virginia Tech to be instrumental in this achievement because it laid the foundation for my graduate work and career,” Baldwin said.

Of the 96,000 federally employed engineers identified by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 28 were nominated for the Federal Engineer of the Year Award, with 10 finalists being named, according to the National Society of Professional Engineers.
