Please remember that in addition to your laptop are expected to have a Windows 7 Slate with pen or older convertible tablet for inking in class and to complete homework assignments.
Note: Students should always bring all their original software with their laptops to school as it will be needed to install Windows and properly maintain their laptop.
Things to Consider Before Your Purchase
Although these will meet our specifications as a laptop, there are drawbacks that all students need to know before deciding to use an Apple laptop in Engineering:
- Engineering does not maintain computer labs for students. Students are expected to have their own computer that meets our requirements.
- SWAT will only provide help with Apple Bootcamp and Windows. They will not provide help with problems when running Apple's OSx
- Apple laptops do not normally have a damage protection warranty available which is highly utilized by students. These can be purchased separately from vendors such as Safeware and Squaretrade.
- Students will still be required to install and maintain Windows on their laptop.
- Installing Windows on Apple laptops has proven difficult for many students.
- Virtually installing Windows requires allocating RAM and hard drive space to Windows which then reduces the specifications of your system. Bootcamp is the only option that does not compromise your system specifications. (Apple Bootcamp Instructions)
- Many products are available to virtually install Windows, and each introduces new issues. It is recommended that you have a minimum of 8GB or Ram if you plan to use one of these products.
- Students must maintain two separate operating systems and associated software. Microsoft Windows 7 and Mac Office 2011 are both available to download from Network Software after the Undergraduate Bundle is purchased.
- Most faculty do not provide Apple specific instructions or assist students with problems in class if they are using an Apple laptop.
Please review our policy on "Deviation from the Requirement" before you make your purchase decision.
