Your first step should be talking to the COE International Programs Office to schedule an appointment. The office will help guide you with program options, course transfers, and scholarship information.
Course credit transfers depend on the program. Faculty-designed programs directly provide Tech credit. For other programs, your credit (but not your grades) will transfer if you do all of the following:
Although learning a foreign language is very valuable and can be an important component of an international experience, it is not a requirement for studying abroad. There are many English-language options available, both in English-speaking countries and in locations where English is not the native language. In addition, some programs include language courses along with research or engineering courses. Don't let the fact that you don't know a foreign language stop you from having an amazing cultural and educational experience.
Typically, the financial aid that you receive while you are at VT travels with you when you study abroad on programs for which you pay tuition and fees directly to Virginia Tech. This includes bilateral exchanges and ISEP programs. For non-VT programs, some forms of financial aid may transfer. In all cases, be sure to complete the necessary paperwork with the Education Abroad office. You can get assistance with travel and living expenses by applying for the numerous scholarships that are available to students studying abroad. There are additional scholarships available on Education Abroad's Scholarships and Financial Aid page.
There are a number of variables that affect your graduation date, including how well you plan ahead, the length and timing of your study abroad program, and your particular academic situation. Work with the COE International Programs office and your academic advisor to find the study abroad program that best fits your goals.
