Greg began taking classes through CGEP during the fall 2006 semester. In search of a program that would help him develop as an environmental scientist, Greg discovered CGEP by researching distance learning programs on the internet. The Virginia Tech Environmental Science and Engineering Program through CGEP seemed to be a perfect fit for his life and work.
"I believe the course work will help me develop new, important skills that I will need to thrive in the industry, as well as help me to further develop the skills I already have," Greg says. The opportunity to choose from several different receive sites also appealed to him. "[CGEP] is making it possible to obtain a degree from an institution of my choice without leaving my area of residence. I enjoy the flexibility."
Greg’s position with BEM involves scheduling and managing field activities associated with soil and groundwater remediation and storage tank integrity testing; assisting federal facilities in maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory compliance regarding pollution prevention; cost estimation and proposal development for potential project procurement; and conducting Environmental Assessments, Environmental Baseline Surveys, Environmental Impact Statements, among other responsibilities.Even in his first class, Greg felt that he gained a great deal of knowledge that directly relates to his field and is used on a daily basis. "I believe the knowledge I am acquiring is helping me to understand certain aspects of my job better."
Greg received his Associate in Applied Science - Environmental Protection from Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational and Technical Studies with an emphasis in Environmental Science and a minor in Business from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. He has been working as an environmental consultant for four years. In his free time, Greg enjoys mountain biking and backpacking.
