Virginia Tech Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program Offerings

CGEP degrees offered:

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Master of Science in Civil Engineering

Concentration Area: Transportation Infrastructure & Systems Engineering Course Listings*

Summary: The Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering program is based on two ideas. First, engineers are responsible for life-cycle of the designed system. Second, engineers must be capable of optimizing the total system performance of large-scale public work projects, including their social and environmental impacts, in a way that addresses the critical issues of infrastructure behavior, deterioration science, and structural rehabilitation. As a result, the infrastructure program maintains pedagogical and practical links to Environmental Engineering and Systems Engineering.

Master of Science in Civil Engineering or
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Engineering

Concentration Area: Environmental and Water Resources Engineering
Course Listings (MS CE)* Course Listings (MS ESEN)*

Summary: This curriculum is designed for students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in the physical or life sciences. Students may select courses in a variety of environmental disciplines.

Graduate Coordinator: Beth Lucas ph: (540) 231-4595

Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Master of Science or Master of Engineering

Summary: The Master of Science (M.S.) degree, which requires a thesis, and the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree, which requires a project and report, are the two Master's degree programs offered in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. The M.S. and M.Eng. degree programs are designed to meet the individual needs of graduate students. Degree preference varies among the employers. Some prefer thesis students (particularly for the demonstration of research and writing skills) while others seek the broad-based knowledge which results from more course work.

Summary: Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that integrates many different engineering specialties into a total engineering effort to ensure an efficient and effective product (system) output. Systems engineering analyzes the operational needs of industrial, business and government enterprises and by applying scientific and engineering technology develops the integrated hardware and software required to meet those needs. A systems engineer is one who can apply the team approach to the process of bringing systems into being and can define their various components, identify and integrate the engineering disciplines needed to develop them and understand the system's operational and maintenance requirements for the entire consumer-use period.

Master of Engineering Administration

Engineering Administration
Course Listings*

Summary: The Master of Engineering Administration (M.E.A.) degree provides practicing engineers, scientists and technical professionals with a graduate level academic experience in Technology Management that further prepares them for career advancement --- in the role of managing and providing administrative support for the technology-based operations of a progressive enterprise. Graduates of this program typically move into advanced positions as project manager, program administrator, lab director, engineering manager, technology executive, etc.
