Ford to Demo Virtual Reality Design at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, VA, APRIL 20, 2012 - Years before a Ford vehicle shines on the stage of car shows or arrives in dealer showrooms, Ford researchers are hard at work behind the scenes.

In Ford’s immersive Environment Lab (FiVE), a state of-the-art facility that uses virtual reality to fully experience a vehicle long before a physical prototype can be built, designers and engineers analyze how concepts come together and are able to start working on the driving experience.

Early evaluations in the virtual world contribute to the final high-quality materials, superior craftsmanship and refined finish that characterize Ford vehicles. They also speed up production timings while reducing costs.

The same technology is also used to build a virtual manufacturing world, to set up the assembly jobs with digital avatars. Ford engineers can analyze the manufacturing process beforehand to reduce the physical stress of assembly line jobs and prevent injuries, ultimately increasing overall quality.

On Friday, April 20th, you will have the chance to experience firsthand Ford’s innovative use of virtual engineering and manufacturing technologies at Virginia Tech. Please visit the Ford display and take your seat in the "Virtual Reality buck". A Ford engineer will guide you through the journey and give you a taste of what happens in Ford’s Labs.
