Computational Thinking Research

Computer Science - Seminar Event

Location: Torgersen 2150

Prof. Deborah Tatar, Department of Computer Science, Virginia Tech is the speaker. The abstract of her talk is the following: Almost everybody now lives with computers (if only in the form of cell phones). They make them work for their purposes, sometimes with difficulty. They may even write little programs. But these encounters do not make them into computer scientists any more than working on our cars turns us into automotive engineers. To be a computer scientist means being able to engage in computational thinking. What is computational thinking? And how can we get 8th graders to engage in proto-computational thinking? And why does it matter? We are beginning a design and development project, working with Henrico County Public Schools, to integrate computational thinking subcomponents into instruction in core curricular areas (Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science). Come hear about the challenging fun of working on a truly wicked problem.
