Computer Science - Seminar Event

Location: Torgerson 2150

Dr. Guy Steele and Dr. Dick Gabriel delivered this talk on the history of programming languages. The abstract is the following: ACM SIGPLAN has sponsored three History of Programming Languages Conferences (HOPL 1978, 1993, 2007) chaired originally by Jean Sammet, former ACM President. The idea is that the PL community would "consider the technical factors which influenced the development of certain programming languages." To be discussed at the conference, a PL had to have been created and in use for at least 11 years PRIOR to the meeting. Barbara Ryder and Brent Hailpern co-chaired the 2007 HOPL III conference at which this keynote talk was delivered. The cleverness of the talk is how Steele and Gabriel illustrated ideas in programming languages from 1957-2007 in small examples and discussions, with accompanying sound track, animations, etc.
