Scholarships for Prospective Students in the College of Engineering

Academic Scholarships

Virginia Tech's College of Engineering offers academic scholarships to incoming freshmen, transfers from Virginia Community Colleges, and upperclass undergraduate students.


Freshman Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to entering freshmen in engineering:

  • Dean's Scholar Scholarship
  • Eleanor Davenport Leadership Scholarship
  • Jerry H. Ballangee Engineering Scholarship
  • Charles S. Brown Engineering Scholarship
  • Jerry S. Chaney Scholarship
  • Robert C. Heterick, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
  • James A. Rule, Sr.  Engineering Scholarship
  • Charles F. Sheffield ’76 Memorial Scholarship
  • Hobart Speegle, Jr. Scholarship
  • Charles C. Walts Endowed Scholarship

The Dean's Scholar & Davenport Scholarships have an application process required. The 2010 application deadline is January 29, 2010.  FAQ regarding the Dean's Scholar and Davenport programs is also available. Scholarship offers for these two awards will be announced by March 15, 2010 via email. A banquet for prospective award winners will be hosted on campus April 4, 2010.

New Engineering Scholarship Program:
IDEAS
(Increasing Diversity through Engineering Academic Scholarships)

This scholarship program is new for the 09/10 academic year, and is available to select freshmen and transfer students. Any student applying for/receiving this award must demonstrate financial need via the FAFSA (if you will not complete a FAFSA, or do not qualify for need-based funds via the FAFSA assessment, you will not be eligible to receive this award).

All remaining freshmen scholarships have no application process. Students will be considered for these scholarships based upon admission to the College of Engineering as an entering freshman student in General Engineering. Announcements of these awards will be made in June 2009.

Transfer Student Scholarships

Transfer students from Virginia's community colleges may apply for the Leo A. Padis Scholarships. Padis Scholarships are available only to Engineering Associate Degree graduates of the Virginia Community College System. Awards are $1000 and are merit based. Applications are available in the engineering departments at the community colleges in February. Application deadline is June 1.
