2009-2010 College of Engineering Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships

We are now accepting applications for College of Engineering merit scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher will be considered competitive for the majority of scholarships, though some scholarships do require a higher GPA.

Anyone who wishes to receive a college scholarship MUST submit this application. Even if you have received a scholarship in past years which is renewable based on your GPA alone, you still must submit the application by the deadline listed above in order to be eligible for any additional departmental or college-level funding.

Applications are available on-line at https://coescholarship.stl.vt.edu/. You may need to accept a security certificate to access this site; the data is secure and it is safe to accept the certificate.

YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION ELECTRONICALLY.

Please note the application includes an essay which can be attached from Word (or Adobe). You may attach the essay at the same time you initially complete the application, or return to your application after the essay is composed to attach it. Recognize that incomplete applications (i.e. those lacking essays) will not be considered. Essays must be limited to one typed page, 10 pt. Times New Roman font. The essay question for this application is:

The Virginia Tech motto is, "Ut Prosim," that I may serve.  You have chosen to begin a career in the engineering profession.  How do you envision putting the Virginia Tech motto into action?  How, specifically, do you plan to put your engineering skills and efforts into service for your family, your community, your employer, your country, your place of worship, your alma mater? (Depth of thinking, clarity & conciseness will be considered when reviewing your essay.)

Applications must be complete, including essay, and submitted no later than Monday, March 2, 2009. The submittal function will be cut off at one second past 11:59:59pm, so please plan accordingly.

Scholarship amounts vary from $500 for one year to $5000+/year renewable up to three years. Some sponsors request personal interviews; others allow the dean’s office or departmental scholarship committees to select scholarship recipients.

We strongly encourage you to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the University GeneralScholarship Application. More information on both of these applications can be found at the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid web page at Financial Aid. Submitting these applications will enhance your scholarship opportunities for other university scholarships.

Most scholarship awards will be made by July 1st. Notification will be sent to your Virginia Tech email account
